The Scala dei Turchi (or in Spanish Ladder of the Turks) is one of the most special places in Sicily. This coast was one of the most common points for the landings of Saracen pirates, hence the name. However, what is really interesting is the limestone rock of a pure white that has eroded over time and giving it the characteristic silhouette in the form of steps that we see today. It is located in the vicinity of Realmonte, about 20 km from Agrigento, and to visit it you have to take into account certain tips. Here we tell you how to get there and how to visit the Scala dei Turchi.

To get there, you just have to put the address in Google Maps (with writing Scala dei Turchi, that's enough) Below we leave you a map with all the useful points indicated. Once there, the first thing you will have to do is search parking. On the same road, near the beginning of the descent, you can park. But be careful! with the signs since there is a area where parking on both sides of the road is not prohibited, and if you leave it here it is very likely that you will take a fine of € 28.70. Make sure that you park from the sign that says “Sosta consentita destra / sinistra”, that allows parking usually on the side closest to the sea.

If you see it complicated, in the immediate vicinity of the descent there are several private parking, who usually charge € 5 per car (€ 3 per motorcycle) for the whole day of parking, but be careful because some close before sunset. And of course ... the grace of the site is just to see its mythical sunset, one of the best in the Mediterranean.

Returning to Realmonte we saw a municipal car park, “parcheggio comunale”, which we assume is free, although it is not too close. We put everything on the map below.

We already have the car well parked in a safe place. Now we have to reach the point where the descent begins. It won't be hard to find it, just keep walking on the main road. At the same entrance there is a decorated arch, a souvenir stand and restaurant advertisements, such as the Ristorante Lido Scala dei Turchi... It has no loss, come on. From there there is a zigzag descent with ramps and steps, until you reach the beach. That journey is about 5 minutes.

Once on the beach, you have to turn right and Walk on the sand for another 5 minutes. It reaches almost the beginning of the rock itself.

That's when we have to enter the sea and walk along a rope, leaving on the right a fence with some networks that protect from landslides. They are only 10-15 meters and the water can reach the waist ... If you do not wear shorts you will have to roll up your sleeves;). By the way, some booties are not a bad idea at all. Apparently before it was very easy to access the rock area, but after some landslides in December 2017, it must be done in this way.

The next step is the most complicated, climb the white rock! Here you have to take out your adventurous spirit and walk through this limestone rock until it borders it and find your ideal place to watch the sunset (although any time of the day is worth it). On the other side there is a beach of fine sand and clear waters very cool.

I'm sure you'll achieve it! We unfortunately arrived one day when they were shooting a movie, and they had the last part closed. So we have to write it down for an upcoming trip.

We arrived around 18 so we could not appreciate it in all its beauty, but the truth is that it looked good. There is enough space and the water looks crystal clear. At the beginning of the beach there is a beach bar that also offers sun loungers and parasols.

There are several viewpoints on the main road that runs parallel to the coast. The closest and that is located almost on the Scala is fine, but we recommend one that is somewhat further, to the west, to see it better.

A small village appears on the other side of the panorama. Is about Lido Rossello and, although we did not visit it, it looks like having a great beach! We believe that a good plan is to find accommodation here and enjoy the whole environment quietly.

On this map you will find all the useful points to plan the visit.
