Looking for ideas of things to see and do on Lake Bled? In this post we give you all the information you need to fully enjoy this beautiful corner.

The lake bled It is one of the most beautiful places in Slovenia, and without a doubt, one of the best lakes in Europe. It is only 45 minutes from Ljubljana so it would be a real crime not to visit it ...

This glacier lake is located in the Julian Alps at 475 meters high. In addition to an idyllic environment there are 3 things that make it a unique lake: its color (it changes from green to blue according to the weather), its castle (which dominates it from the top of a mountain) and obviously its island.

Island? Well yes: that of Lake Bled is the Only natural island in all of Slovenia. It is not very big but if enough to house a church (that of the Assumption) in whose bell tower is the famous bell they say, it brings good luck to the one who makes it ring ... yes before giving the bell you will have to give it to you I hit the 99 steps that separate it from the waters of the lake. The Slovenian name of the church is so easy that it is worth recovering:Cerkev Marijinega vnebovzetja. Olé!

| THE BEST VIEWS OF LAKE BLED

To get the best views of this wonder of Mother Nature there are three options:

  1. Go up to Bled Castle, on top of a mountain that is born at the foot of the lake. We did not go, the entrance costs € 11 !!
  2. Visit the Belvedere Pavilion where you can take the best selfie with the lake in the background. Here you can also try the typical Bled cake: the cream cake, made with whipped cream and flan. Very rich!
  3. From the jetty, at the foot of the Belvedere Pavilion there are roads surrounding the lake. We went left towards a little beach. We didn't arrive but it looked very good! Ideal for a bath.

The lake is worth visiting throughout the year: in summer it is ideal as its cold waters get hot (a little, don't even think that it transforms into a jaccuzzi) and you can swim like a free and happy mullet. In autumn the forests that surround it are dyed yellow, red and orange giving it a very interesting appearance. In winter the lake is covered with snow and ice, even there are those who skate on it. And in spring the sun and flowers take center stage.

| WHAT TO SEE AND DO IN BLED

We are not going to bore you with a list. Well yes, we are very smart:

  • You definitely have to walk around the lake: At every step you can marvel more and more. If you want to go around the lake completely, a short walk of 1.30h awaits you. It is very worth it.
  • Take one pletna(the typical lake boat) and reach the central island. It costs € 12 and is a rowing boat! In the lake engines are prohibited to maintain the environment. After climbing the 99 steps you will reach the Church of the Assumption where you can make a wish and ring its bell. People usually ask for the € 6 they just paid for entrance to return.
  • After the little walk you will be hungry ... well try the cream cakeIt is really delicious (although it is a good idea to share it with your companion since it does not stand out as a light cake. It usually costs € 3.6). In the village is the restaurant that first created this cake, it will not be difficult to find it.
  • Tour the town,It doesn't have much history but you can buy some souvenir, tempt fate in the casino, keep taking your picture with the lake ...
  • Swim: There are real areas of “beach” where it is possible to enjoy a good dip, although you can usually swim throughout the lake, except in places that are expressly prohibited through signs.
  • Enjoy the best views from the castle Y from the terrace of Café Belvedere, and incidentally visit the Vila Bled, one of the old residence of Tito ... man did not live badly!

We, having only a few days to enjoy Slovenia, did not have much time to devote to the lake but we are very clear that we are going back: Lake Bled deserves to be visited calmly! If you are more forecasted than us and you have plenty of time, we suggest you visit two places near Bled which have a lot of charm:

  1. The Bohiji Lake: another wonderful alpine lake that is located just 15km from Bled. As a curiosity to tell you that it is the largest lake in Slovenia ... yes, sometimes the dimensions count!
  2. The Vintgar Gorge: a canyon excavated by the Rodovna river where you can travel a mile and a half between green waters, impressive rocks and waterfalls. It is only 11km from Bled.

USEFUL INFO

We visited Bled on a tour that led us to discover several corners of Slovenia in one day. But we are going to leave you the info you need to be able to Visit Lake Bled for free.

How to get free to Lake Bled from Ljubljana: The most effective way is by bus. The trip takes 75 minutes and costs about 6-8 €. If you want to travel by train you have to consider that there are two different stations in Bled (the Lesce-Bled international railway station, which is 4km from the town, and the Bled Jezero railway station, which is 1.5 km from the center). The trip lasts 1 hour, there are several throughout the day. From what we have understood, you have to change trains in Jesenice ... almost better to go by bus!

Sail on Lake Bled: The most typical thing is to take a walk around the lake (to the island) with a pletna, a traditional wooden boat. It usually costs € 12.
