If you arrive in Venice by plane, you will do so at the Marco Polo International Airport, located 10 kilometers away or at the small Treviso Airport, located 40 kilometers away. Keep in mind that although Venice is an island, it is connected by road to the peninsula, allowing you to reach the city as well as by boat, car and bus.

Based on the experience of our first trip, in which we landed in Treviso and our last trip to Venice where we arrived at Marco Polo airport, we show you all the options of how to get from the airport to the center of Venice. We start!

How to get from Marco Polo Airport to Venice

Currently, most flights, whether from low-cost or commercial companies, land at Marco Polo Airport, located north of Venice. For the transfer from the airport to the center of Venice or to your hotel, you have these options:

  • Bus: From the Marco Polo airport, the buses of the ATVO and ACTV companies leave you in Piazzale Roma, in about 20 minutes, for 8 euros.
The ATVO have a frequency of 20 minutes, coinciding their departures with the arrival of the flights. In addition, this company has another line that will take you directly to the Mestre train station, which can be a good option if you stay in this area.
The ACTV company has line 5 to make the transfer from Marco Polo airport to Venice, with a frequency similar to that of ACTV, although it has less space for luggage.

Once you arrive by bus to Piazzale Roma in Venice, if you are not staying in this area, you will have to take a vaporetto that will bring you closer to the historic center or to the Dorsoduro district. The most common stops of this ship are those of Rialto, next to the famous bridge and that of San Marco, located a few meters from the Doge's Palace.

The Vaporetto ticket costs 7.5 euros the journey, although it is advisable if you are going to do more than two boat trips that day, take the day or several ticket, with which you can save a lot of money.
Depending on the luggage you carry, we suggest you try to put yourself in the back or in the front to enjoy the incredible views of the Grand Canal.

  • Ship: On our last trip to Venice, we used the water buses Alilaguna, which are the most comfortable transport service to get from Marco Polo Airport to the center of Venice.
In addition to comfort, during the journey you will enjoy magnificent views of the Lagoon and Venice, which will make the route from the airport to Venice much more pleasant.
Taking this boat is also a good option if you stay in the islands of Murano, Burano or Torcello, when you stop with the green line.
The Alilaguna departure jetty is located in the same airport, 10 minutes walk from the departure gates, the transfer being very easy, since you only have to follow the signs of the cartels.
If you stay in the central area of Venice, you must take the orange line of Alilaguna, which in addition to crossing the Venetian lagoon, passes through a large part of the Grand Canal with several stops between which are Rialto and San Marcos.
The only negative points of this transport are that the journey takes an hour and a quarter and the price is 15 euros or 27 euros, if you buy the round trip.
  • Cab: The prices of taxis, which can exceed 100 euros if they are private and 35 euros if they are shared, make them only recommended if you arrive at dawn or your hotel is far from a stop in Vaporetto or Alilaguna.
  • Private transport: With a lower price to the taxi, it is a good option if you travel in a group as well as being the most easy, since a driver will wait for you at the exit of the airport, with a sign with your name, which will take you to Venice. If your hotel is in the historic center of the city, you can also include the Water Taxi, which will take you to the closest stop to your hotel. You can book the private transfer here.
